The first summer reading club session of the summer of 2024 invited Ban from miscLab.
In recent years, Ban has focused on digital cultural heritage research, digital restoration studies, book design, and bookbinding. In 2019, Ban joined the Tianjin Miscellanea Image Lab (miscLab) as a partner. In 2021 and 2023, Ban participated in training programs at the National Library of China, where they began studying European classical bookbinding and the restoration of Western ancient books. Over time, Ban has worked on the design and binding of several books, including Mirror Poetry Collection (anonymous, Artist’s Book), No One Is an Artist, and No One Is Not an Artist (Fine Binding), and Two Chairs & A Ladder by Liu Lanxuan (Mini Artist’s Book).
Additionally, Ban has been involved in book restoration, taking on the repair of several aged and damaged books such as When We Were Very Young (1933), Paradise Lost (1795), Illustrated Study of Chinese Hua Li Furniture (1991), and Songs From NOW WE ARE SIX (1928).

Ban
Ban is an art practitioner who works with photography and books as mediums. In 2019, they joined miscLab, engaging in digital cultural heritage research. Starting in 2020, Ban began exploring bookbinding, subsequently delving into the study of Western classical bookbinding and the restoration of Western ancient texts. In their daily book-related work, Ban primarily assists artists and creators by designing and binding their book projects, or by producing handcrafted artist’s proof copies to support the completion or validation of their works. In 2023, Ban established the “miscLab Bindery,” dedicated to helping artists and creators address all matters related to “bookmaking.” Notable binding projects include: Liu Lanxuan – “Two Chairs & A Ladder,” Wang Yingying – “Hui,” and Wang Xiaolong – “Calling the Tree.”
