BANANAFISH BOOKS

A Perfect Day for Bananafish。

(ins:shanghaiartbookfair)

Chapter One:
The Book as a Medium: Artists’ Books, Book Selection and Editing
2009, Independent Bookshops, Artists’ Books, Book Selection, Reading and Editing
Starting with an Independent Bookshop: Artists’ Books and BANANAFISH’s Book Selection Work

BANANAFISH BOOKS 香蕉鱼书店 was founded in Shanghai in 2009. Our original idea was simple: to bring closer those books that were difficult to encounter in ordinary bookstores, yet truly deserved to be read and seen, and to create a distinctive concept art and design bookstore. From the very beginning, the idea of a “concept bookstore” was central to our identity.

Before BANANAFISH came into being, we had already spent years following independent bookstores, art publishing, graphic design, photography and visual culture around the world through the blog Sophie’s Independent Bookstores and the art and design media platform Simple Style. Through our travels, we repeatedly encountered small bookstores, independent publishers, artists’ self-published works and zines. These experiences gradually made us realise that a book is not simply a container for text and knowledge. It can also be an artwork, a design method, a way of preserving personal experience, and even a starting point for relationships between people.

Many of these observations and reflections were recorded on our very early website, the Sophie’s Independent Bookstores blog: www.indieday.cn/indiebookstores. Simple Style also accumulated a substantial archive of writing and research on visual culture: www.simple-style.com.

The name BANANAFISH comes from J. D. Salinger’s story A Perfect Day for Bananafish. In the early years, we also named our bookstore website A Perfect Book for Bananafish—we were always looking for that “perfect book for Bananafish.” This slightly personal and idiosyncratic name also reflected our earliest understanding of what an independent bookstore could be: it did not need to own every book; it needed to keep making its own judgments and choices.

Even the unusually long website address—almost like the tail of a fish—www.a-perfect-book-for-banananafish.com carried, from the beginning, a certain stubborn resistance to the internet and to the culture of instant access.

Book selection has always been at the heart of BANANAFISH.

We focus on artists’ books, photography books, graphic design, typography, illustration, architecture, visual culture, independent magazines, zines, and publications by small publishers and individual creators from around the world. Rather than building a large inventory according to conventional categories, we prefer to construct our own reading paths through one specific book at a time. A book that we genuinely understand, value and want to introduce to others often matters more to us than quantity.

When many of these publications first entered the bookstore, there was almost no information about them available in Chinese. We would read them, research the authors and publishers, understand the context in which each book was produced, and then reorganise that information for our readers.

Book selection, therefore, gradually became more than purchasing. It became a long-term editorial practice: discovering, reading, judging, building context, and introducing works to new readers.

Nearly twenty years later, this remains one of BANANAFISH’s most fundamental ways of working.

Chapter Two:
Publishing and Co-production: Zines, Printing and Collaboration with Artists
Zines, Artist Collaborations, Pausebread Press, Risograph, Exhibitions and Workshops
From Zines to Pausebread Press: Publishing, Printing and Collaboration with Artists

BANANAFISH has never understood itself simply as a shop that sells books.

In our practice, Bookshop, Publishing, Exhibition, Printing, Workshop, Talk and Community have always been interconnected.

The bookstore is an entry point. Someone may discover an artist for the first time through a photography book; someone else may begin experimenting with self-publishing after encountering a zine; another person may first enter BANANAFISH because of an exhibition, a talk or a workshop.

We hope these different entry points ultimately lead toward the same thing: encouraging people to keep reading, making, communicating and expressing themselves.

From the early years onward, we continuously invited artists, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers to collaborate with us on zines and artists’ books.

For us, publishing has never meant simply repackaging completed work into book form. Instead, it means reconsidering the work together with the creator: Why does this work need to become a book? In what sequence should it be read? How can paper, format, binding, printing and the physical act of turning pages become part of the content itself?

In 2011, we established Pausebread Press As Risograph, screen printing, binding and short-run publishing became part of the bookstore’s working system, BANANAFISH developed an open and integrated publishing process extending from content discussion and editing to design, printing, binding, display and sales.

Over time, this also shaped a working relationship that we value deeply: artists, designers, publishers, printers, bookstores and readers do not necessarily have to exist within a rigid upstream-downstream hierarchy like that of conventional publishing.

Everyone can work around a book together. Through continuous discussion, experimentation, making and feedback, the final publication gradually takes shape.

We understand this as a more equal way of working.

Over the years, BANANAFISH has also continued to open its bookstore space to different forms of cultural practice. Within a space of only a few dozen square metres, we have hosted exhibitions of artists’ books, graphic design, photography, zines and posters; publishing project presentations; Reading Clubs; Binding Talks; design lectures; artist talks; and a wide range of hands-on workshops.

We have introduced international independent publishing practices such as Nieves, Roma Publications, Primary Information and Knust Press, while continuing to follow how designers such as Karel Martens, Katsumi Asaba? [Note: need preserve 服部一成 = Kazunari Hattori, 田中义久=Yoshihisa Tanaka] work through books. At the same time, we are equally willing to give space to young creators making their first zine, small teams just beginning to establish their own publishing practices, and those who have not yet entered established institutional systems but have already developed an independent way of expressing themselves—people willing to devote years to what they genuinely believe in.

What makes an independent bookstore truly interesting is precisely this: a publication that has already entered the history of design can sit in the same space as a young creator’s first zine, freshly bound in an edition of twenty copies. They face the same reader and, in doing so, form new connections.

Chapter Three:
From the Bookshop to UNFOLD: A Public Space for Independent Publishing
2017, UNFOLD, Shanghai Art Book Fair, Independent Publishers, Cross-city Exchange
UNFOLD Shanghai Art Book Fair: Bringing Independent Publishers Together

As BANANAFISH’s practice continued to expand, we increasingly realised that simply running a bookstore was no longer enough to respond to the independent publishing ecology we were witnessing in China.

As more and more young creators began making their own books, and as art bookstores, Riso studios, independent publishers and zine communities gradually appeared in different cities, we began asking ourselves: beyond placing books on shelves, could we create a larger gathering place where these otherwise dispersed people could genuinely meet?

In 2017, we initiated UNFOLD Shanghai Art Book Fair.

From the first gathering of several dozen publishers and creators to a platform that later connected artists, designers, publishers, art schools and cultural institutions across China and overseas, UNFOLD gradually became an important outward extension of BANANAFISH’s practice.

The art book fair changed the way we understood the scale of a “bookstore.”

A bookstore may meet dozens of readers each day, while an art book fair can bring hundreds of creators into direct contact with thousands of visitors over the course of several days.

Publications are no longer simply products displayed on shelves. They become mediums through which exchange happens: authors stand behind their own books; readers can browse, ask questions and buy directly; publishers from different countries and cities meet one another; and new collaborations may begin beside a single table.

As a result, we became increasingly interested in the entire ecology behind independent publishing: how a work is created, who designs it, where it is printed, how it enters bookstores, how it reaches art book fairs, how it finds readers, and how a young publisher can continue working when the commercial scale of the practice remains relatively small.

From Bananafish Books and Pausebread Press to UNFOLD, these projects may have different names and functions, but for us they have always grown from the same starting point:

Let books produce art, and let art enter everyday life through books.

What BANANAFISH cares about is not simply making “art” more popular or accessible, but finding a more natural way for specialised cultural content to remain close to people without becoming distant simply because it is specialised.

An important publication in design history can be studied seriously, but it can also simply be slowly read in a bookstore. An artist’s work can enter a museum, but it can also become an affordable zine that a young person takes home. A designer’s working method can be viewed in an exhibition, but it can also be experienced directly through a workshop.

We believe culture truly begins to have an effect not when someone is told, “This is important art,” but in a moment of accidental reading, looking, touching or conversation, when a person suddenly develops an interest of their own.

Chapter Four:
The Bookshop as a Site of Learning: Everyday Work and Knowledge Production
Interns, Everyday Life at the Bookshop, Book Selection Research, Printing and Production, Project Execution
Learning to Work in a Bookshop: From Book Selection and Printing to the art book fair scene

Another long-standing role of BANANAFISH has been that of an open site for learning and practice.

Over nearly twenty years, students from China and many other parts of the world have come to BANANAFISH as interns.

Many first arrived simply because they loved art books, independent publishing, graphic design or zines, and because they carried a certain imagination and curiosity about what an independent bookstore could be. Some stayed for only a few months, while others remained involved for much longer. Some encountered artists’ books and independent publishing seriously for the first time here, while others joined us with their own research and creative directions already taking shape.

We have never understood “internships” as merely auxiliary work.

At BANANAFISH, students enter the actual daily life of an independent cultural organisation. They organise and research books, communicate with publishers, artists and designers, and take part in book selection, display, publishing, exhibitions, workshops and event production.

They also enter the printing environment of Pausebread Press, where they can understand the complete process through which a book moves from content and design to production, into the bookstore, and finally into the hands of readers.

When UNFOLD Art Book Fair takes place, they enter an even larger cultural field, working directly with publishers, artists and independent organisations from different cities and countries.

This kind of learning is difficult to fit neatly into a syllabus.

It happens instead through the practical details of everyday work: how to judge whether a book deserves to be introduced; how to explain to a stranger why a particular publication is interesting; how to discuss a work with an artist; how to gradually turn an ambiguous idea into a project that can actually happen.

It also means learning how to deal with budgets, time, logistics, sales, unexpected situations on site, and the realities of how a small cultural organisation continues to operate under practical constraints.

We hope students can see here that cultural work is not only about aesthetics, knowledge and creativity. It also requires responsibility, judgment, communication, patience, and the ability to carry an idea through to completion.

Over the years, generation after generation of young people have left BANANAFISH and gone on to work in design, art, publishing, curating, education and other cultural fields. Some later established their own studios, publishing projects or creative practices. Others returned years later as artists, designers, collaborators or publishers.

For us, these relationships are not secondary outcomes of institutional work.

They are themselves part of BANANAFISH’s long-term cultural practice.

What an independent bookstore can truly pass on may not be limited to what sits on its shelves. It can also pass on a way of working, a set of standards for judgment, and a belief that independent cultural practice is still worth giving time to.

BANANAFISH BOOKS has therefore gradually become a space somewhere between a bookstore, a studio and an informal school: people come here not only to consume culture, but also to participate in how culture is selected, made, circulated and carried forward.

Chapter Five:
Ongoing Independent Practice: Networks of Creators and Cultural Planning
Long-term Collaboration, Publishers and Creators, Content Planning, International Exchange, Independent Judgment
Working with Creators: BANANAFISH’s Long-term Collaborations and Independent Practices

Over the past decade and more, BANANAFISH has moved through different cities and spaces, while also experiencing the continuous changes affecting physical bookstores and the wider cultural industry.

We have become increasingly certain that what a small independent bookstore can truly accumulate over time is not the size of its space, the scale of its inventory or short-term traffic, but judgment, relationships and trust.

We have worked with some publishers for more than a decade. We have watched young designers bring their work into the bookstore for the first time, and later build their own studios and publishing programmes. Some students who first joined one of our workshops later became designers, artists and independent publishers, eventually returning to BANANAFISH with books of their own.

Many artists and publishers visiting Shanghai from overseas have treated BANANAFISH as an entry point into China’s independent publishing scene. At the same time, through the bookstore, exhibitions and art book fairs, we have introduced Chinese creators to colleagues in Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Berlin and many other cities.

These long-term relationships are among the things BANANAFISH values most.

In recent years, we have also been reconsidering what role a physical bookstore should play within today’s cultural environment.

Relying on book retail alone has become increasingly difficult as a long-term model for an independent art bookstore. BANANAFISH has therefore moved more clearly from being simply a “place that sells books” toward a platform combining content curation, selective retail, publishing, exhibitions, education, international collaboration and cultural projects.

But this does not mean moving away from the bookstore.

On the contrary, it brings us back to the bookstore’s most fundamental ability: curation—the ability to choose and to build relationships.

Choosing a book is a form of curation. Organising a bookshelf is also a form of curation. Inviting a designer to make an exhibition, organising a Reading Club, publishing an artist’s book, producing an art book fair, or even finding the right creator for a cultural brand all come from the same working method: making judgments among an abundance of information and possibilities about what deserves to be seen, and creating meaningful connections between different people.

BANANAFISH has always been a very small bookstore.

We do not want to prove our value by constantly expanding our scale. On the contrary, we increasingly believe that small cultural spaces possess another kind of strength: they can preserve independent judgment, act quickly, maintain direct relationships with creators, and allow ideas that have not yet been validated by the market to happen first.

From one book, one bookshelf and a small talk attended by a dozen people, to today’s network connecting publishing, design, education, printing, exhibitions and international cultural collaboration, BANANAFISH has not changed its original interests.

We still love discovering a book we have never seen before and opening it. We are still willing to meet someone who is only just beginning to create. We still believe that a small publication can contain an entire and independent world.

But what BANANAFISH BOOKS wants to do has never been limited to bringing books, works or projects in front of more people.

For nearly twenty years, what has mattered more to us is using a book, an exhibition, a curatorial project or an event to affirm and pass on something we have always believed in:

believing in one’s own judgment; believing that what truly matters deserves long-term commitment; believing that creation and persistence have power in themselves; and believing that ideas which have not yet been seen or proven still deserve to be taken seriously.

Bookstores, publishing, printing, exhibitions, art book fairs and the many cultural projects that followed are, for us, simply different carriers.

What truly runs through all of them is an almost stubborn conviction: to give time to what we genuinely believe in, and to allow that belief to be tested, strengthened and passed on through repeated practice.

We hope that all these experiences BANANAFISH has put into practice can become a kind of strength that continues to remain within people:

the willingness to trust one’s own choices, the courage to persist with things that are still unfinished, and the readiness to give time to what truly matters.

A Perfect Day for Bananafish A Perfect Book for Bananafish

Bananafish Books、Pausebread Press、UNFOLD。
