On Sunday, the 23rd afternoon of this week, SUIYUAN’s ZINE – a sharing session by SUIYUAN, the close friend of Banana Fish Bookstore, was held at the bookstore.
During the interview with SUIYUAN last year, she mentioned her thoughts as a personal creator:
“Every year, I came up with new themes and formats based on different contemplations. The pursuit of freshness and continuity was essential to my work. Another crucial aspect was the pursuit of completeness… The outcome of a project was the result of collecting, connecting, recording, and presenting everything in a complete manner.”
Due to her own standards, SUIYUAN’s ZINE encompassed an unexpected combination of creative bookbinding designs and content creation. In the following text, we showcased some of the ZINEs that were featured in this sharing session.
In the Shanghai Art Book Fair held in June last year, SUIYUAN was awarded the Excellent Exhibition Unit prize. In this sharing event, apart from presenting six of her ZINEs, SUIYUAN also leisurely shared some of the books she bought at the book fair.

“SUIYUAN” is a brand IP created by Wang Danyue in 2018, which includes the “SUIYUAN Corner Store” comics and an online platform. SUIYUAN Girl embodies a yearning for an all-embracing and optimistic attitude towards life, eagerly exploring the potential for freshness and positivity in everyday experiences. She enjoys drawing, designing, and all things that bring a heartfelt smile. Currently, she is experimenting with some experimental zines and creating fun and random creations.

“Daily Sketches by SUIYUAN” – Blue and Yellow Edition: Why can’t a book be a purse?
“Daily Sketches by SUIYUAN” Series, Volume 1 & Volume 2, are bound with metal fittings commonly used in clasp purses. As I accumulated a portion of these sketches, the idea of creating a compilation emerged.
Once the desire to pursue this project became clear, I embarked on the journey of encountering my artwork. Clasp purses were my favorite objects from childhood, and when I discovered the similarity between the metal clasp material and the way books open and close, I deeply resonated with this fascinating idea. As a result, I purchased various sizes of clasp materials to experiment with, testing the thickness of the paper, the feel of the opening and closing, and other aspects.
“Vanishing Thoughts” Blue and Red Edition: Do you also have a fondness for fire?
“Vanishing Thoughts” is an expression of inner monologues. The themes of “blue,” “flame,” and “love” are the intriguing subjects that attracted my research. Vitality, natural force, and love are eternal. Within these three key elements, I find continuous inspiration, symbolizing the complete dedication to the creative process, the passionate burning of love, and the steadfastness towards life.
Two editions have already been released, and the third edition is coming soon.
“Daily Sketches by SUIYUAN – Paperback Edition” – This is a compilation.
“Daily Sketches by SUIYUAN – Paperback Edition” is a reiteration of the previous two clasp purse zines, gathering over 90 sketches into one collection. It explores various special techniques such as UV printing, embossing, and hot stamping, alongside materials like textured paper, DuPont paper, colored paper, and other mixed materials to create a diverse tactile experience. The content is richer and more complete compared to the clasp purse zines, serving as a summary of this series at this stage.
“Flipped Daily Comics” – Four-panel comics about love.
“Flipped Daily Comics” features the story of Little Round, who loves to doodle and draw, and her best friend, the naturally stern but delicately gentle dinosaur, Little Dino. This comic collection gathers heartwarming moments that take place at the corner store, like little secrets hidden within the moon. Containing 50 four-panel comic strips, the series is currently ongoing.
“One Day – Stillness of Time” – An 80th of a day in stillness.
