Bananafish Books is proud to present Dutch graphic designer & artist Jo Frenken with a solo exhibition of his work and a selection of the artist’s books at our long-awaited new Hongbaoshi Road location. The exhibition will run from November 12 to December 4, 2022.

“Point, Line, Plane”: The six works of “Point, Line, Plane” presented at Bananafish Gallery are a collection of works by designer Jo Frenken that continues a forty-year artistic practice, forming a pictorial language that illustrates the relationship between points, lines and planes and their interplay relationships. At the end of 2021, Jo Frenken has expanded on the idea of the point line plane by creating an artist’s book POINT LINE PLANE in the form of a Risograph, a limited edition of 100 copies, which will also be available at the exhibition.

Jo Frenken, artist and graphic designer, has worked at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Massachusetts since 1977 when he became an artist-in-residence, and has been a key spiritual leader in his role as the Academy’s print director and book publisher for over forty years. The Magical Riso Biennial, a successful biennial conference that brings together Riso experts from around the world to discuss the impact of Risograph printing on art publications.

 

On the occasion of the Point Line Plane exhibition opening, we are also here to share with our readers that the relocation of our headquarter bookshop and the rebuilding of the studio after Bananafish moved from Shiquan Road to Hongbaoshi Road is finally completed! A year-long’s waiting of the HQ is finally here waiting to meet you officially! Besides the main exhibition, we have also planned some small side exhibitions from our friends in other corners of the space, which will be introduced in detail in the following articles. During the period of since we lost our home base on Shiquan Road, we have experienced a lot of good and bad things, a lot of upsets and struggles, nearly broken-up, getting down and getting up again. With the opening of Bananafish Hongbaoshi Road this Saturday, readers will meet us at three of the city’s landmark cultural neighborhoods since this weekend. The many trials and tribulations have, on the contrary,  it all strengthens our vision and ideal of being an independent bookstore space, without pandering or compromising, all of which have formed our strength and faith to grow and with encouragement to refuse and to say no.

A stable and smooth opening, a wishing for a long stay with our friends and our neighborhood form our temper and style. This Saturday, dear friends and readers, we hope to see you at the Hongbaoshi Road store to read books, check the exhibition and see us personally.
