Opening Hours: 10:00-19:00

The exhibition Lore of the Stargazer | 观星 opened on September 4, 2026, at BANANAFISH. Co-presented by graphic designer wenliang.C and the research-based art collective 1220, the exhibition featured guided tours led by wenliang.C during its opening three-day weekend.

1220 provided the narrative content, or “lore,” for the exhibition. Lore can be understood as scattered textual fragments, reminiscent of the hidden message players discover while exploring video games. As the first reader of this written lore, wenliang.C expanded the narrative through visuals. He intentionally left parts of the story untold throughout his design process, inviting viewers to freely imagine the fictional encounter between Copernicus and Columbus.

Lore of the Stargazer encourages audiences to build their own connections between the provided information, what is left untold, and their own imagination. The exhibition features the lore texts alongside the responsive design pieces they inspired. While the stories remain fictional, the questions they provoke are undeniably real. Throughout this co-creation process, text and visuals continually shape one another. The humor and fresh interpretations brought by the design works allow the lore to evolve even further.

We gaze at the stars to reaffirm our skepticism toward history.

In this fictional narrative, language becomes a child’s toy, questioned, imagined, reconstructed, and given new coordinates.

Yet the starlight itself, traveling across thousands of years, is not language; it merely offers relative positions.

We all interpret the scattered stars differently.

With our distant imaginations, we recite and rewrite stories.

Perhaps, that is the true magic of lore.

wenliang.C‘s design practice is positioned at the intersection of 3DCG and 2D graphic visuals. He intentionally preserves the rawness of 3D modeling software, such as unfinished models, low-resolution rendering, and clipping effects, to create a personal style characterized by a lo-fi aesthetic.

His major exhibitions include the solo exhibitions Shashin (写真) at Fluss, Tokyo (2024) and Printed Matter at Detour, Tokyo (2024); the duo exhibition pairpair at Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, Tokyo (2024); and the social design project Here at the Yedao Cultural Community, Huizhou (2025). His works have been consecutively selected for and nominated for the Tokyo TDC Prize. In 2025, he received the Award360° Gold Award for Social Design of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year Award.

1220:

1220 (LuM; YangH) is a research-based art collective formed by Yang and Lu. The two began collaborating during their doctoral studies.

1220 explores the expression of place through different literary forms. Drawing on their perspectives and experiences as outsiders, they treat different literary forms as frameworks for negotiating the fluidity and transformation of place as a lived phenomenon.

Their works include the conceptual artwork Regional Expression No. 1; participatory performance Discourse: Assortment No. 1; installation Plan: K_Alice (PlaceExists(Yamanote)): Sanpo Keikaku; installation Boxed Ukiyo (Nezu, Tokyo, 2024; absolute disorder research-based art exhibition, Suwon, South Korea, 2025); and Wait Here When the Red Light is On (featured in Textopia: Dwelling Places of Language, Shenzhen). For three consecutive years (2024–2026), they curated and managed the grassroots local art event Nezu Project: Neighborhood Art Museum, which was exhibited at the 2026 BAC Community Design Awards.
