When Woolf stared at the spot on the wall, her thoughts drifted around that spot. The topic of publishing, much like the spot on the wall, can trigger a multitude of associations. When you understand publishing as encompassing words, images, objects, sounds, tastes, actions, etc., Around Publishing expands and grows.
Around Publishing is an exhibition and art event initiated and supported by YYO, centered around the concept of publishing. It was recently launched in August at the E.SCAPE Art Space in Shanghai. The project is built upon the connections between international and local graphic designers and artists, gathering various forms of artistic experiments to showcase the many possibilities of publishing. The art events surrounding publishing include exhibitions, reading rooms, workshops, dinners, sound performances, games, films, and more.
For the 17th edition of Bananafish Summer Reading Club, we have invited two key creators from the Around Publishing project’s curatorial team, THURSDAY-FREE: Shao Wei & Chen Kaixin, to share the “publishing results” of Around Publishing with the readers at the bookstore’s lecture space. Everyone is welcome to register and listen to the curatorial work surrounding publishing, which connected the cities of Shanghai and Amsterdam, and engaged with various interesting people this summer.

About Around Publishing 2024
Around Publishing 2024: Reading Room, Kitchen, Garden was a month-long exhibition and art event centered around publishing, held at the E.SCAPE Art Space in Shanghai in August. Within the exhibition space, Around Publishing created a “Reading Room” that showcased works from over 200 creators across China, along with special exhibitions from “ShanghArt Ten Years” and “Design 360°”. Additionally, works by 20 invited artists/designers from both domestic and international backgrounds were featured in a group show, while 4 designers/artists from the Netherlands’ Werkplaats Typografie participated in an artist residency within the space.
During the exhibition, Around Publishing fostered an environment of deep exchange: three weeks of workshops covering different topics, food publishing programs by three different artists and art groups, special invited projects including the Werkplaats Typografie collective’s game Nonoki, a sound-driven visual system installation by KAUKAU, as well as 11 lectures, talks, sound performances, and film screenings by various artists and designers. These activities collectively explored the possibilities of publishing.
