“Duo Duo” is a tree full of blossoms, and also a girl. In the photography book Duo Duo, curated and published by Imageless Studio, photographer Yi Hui has captured the journey of her daughter, Duo Duo, from a baby held in her arms to a young girl.
The essence of photography, as Yi Hui demonstrates, often lies in the most intimate, everyday moments—those instinctive and intuitive shots that tell the real story. Using a language close to life, Yi Hui expresses the human moments of her daughter that feel pure and unrefined.
The girl in the photographs shows precious emotional states, and flipping through the pages, you might momentarily forget who she is facing, only to realize that it is the gaze towards her mother.
Creating this book was a journey of mutual exploration of their relationship. Yi Hui, both mother and photographer, blurs the lines between these two roles. She is not just an observer and recorder but an active participant in Duo Duo’s life. As Duo Duo grows, Yi Hui must balance her identities and her relationship with her daughter. What, then, is Duo Duo’s perspective? How does this mother-daughter pair face each other when Yi Hui puts down the camera and steps into their daily life?
In this 21st edition of the Bananafish Summer Reading Club, Yi Hui and Duo Duo will be joining us to share their experience behind Duo Duo for the very first time, offering a rare glimpse into the creation process. What are the emotional moments behind the camera that Yi Hui found too precious to capture? How does photography serve as a medium to witness the flow of mother-daughter emotions and relationships? We are also honored to have senior media professional Liu Xing and artist Chen Yue joining the discussion. We warmly invite everyone to join us and listen in on this unique conversation.
